ALFA Notes

January 24

When considering the “week one” Executive Orders from the Trump administration, the legacy media is inclined to look at each in isolation. But intelligent observers see something far more strategic at play — a through line between actions that weave together the many fabrics that will design our future.

Punctuated by the announced Stargate project, America this week has declared energy dominance, technological sovereignty, and economic might.

This project recognizes that AI leadership requires massive computing power, and massive computing power requires reliable, abundant energy. Enter the energy emergency declaration announced earlier this week which promises to power the country’s technological ambitions through expedited energy approval processes to deliver the critical energy infrastructure needed to power next-generation technology. This wasn't theoretical at the time of the announcement. Projects like Microsoft's $80 billion AI build-out and Meta's massive Louisiana facility demonstrated the immediate stakes. But then, a day later, the President’s announced Stargate project with SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI supercharged that reality.

Appearing before the World Economic Forum yesterday, Trump declared “rapid approvals” of power plants that would directly power AI datacenters, which the energy emergency will allow the government to do.

Gas turbines, nuclear plants, pipelines, transmission … it’s all in play. No longer is the government acting as the local city code inspector, pointing out that the signage on your new storefront is a foot too high or low. It’s a partner to our greatest ambitions.

At the same time, the Administration is ensuring we aren’t chasing AI dominance to benefit a sacred few while homogenizing the masses. Prior to this point, there was legitimate concern that government rules around AI development and deployment were burdensome and heavy-handed, putting a governor on our opportunity while also dictating the path that must be pursued.

But the President’s AI order last night declares that “we must develop AI systems that are free from ideological bias or engineered social agendas.” … and “revokes certain existing AI policies and directives that act as barriers to American AI innovation, clearing a path for the United States to act decisively to retain global leadership in artificial intelligence.”

Further, it added that “it is the policy of the United States to sustain and enhance America’s global AI dominance in order to promote human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.”

The downstream effects of all of these developments will touch on nearly every aspect of American life. The impetus to advance our energy infrastructure will go beyond datacenter development. It will power homes and factories — new and existing — leading to a full scale reindustrialization of the American economy. Meanwhile, an abundant AI landscape will appeal to any number of functions Americans are looking to complete.

This first week started the clearing out of the regulatory underbrush that modeled an approach taken by many European countries now lost in the wilderness. But this work is just the beginning. With the “golden age” destination clearly in view, it will be up to lawmakers to establish the laws to fully achieve the intended objectives. Keep your attention to ALFA as this unfolds.

Thank you for reading and have a great day.
